Hi, great question! I had the opportunity to ask Rinpoche this question this morning during the Monday morning teaching.
He says there are generally two types of pleasure we may be talking about. In the prayer, we are talking about samsaric pleasure, which is based on ignorance and attachment.
In this way, ultimately, both pleasure and pain are forms of ignorance and grasping. In this Monlam prayer, we are wishing that all beings find the ability to experience beyond these dualistic concepts in order to achieve enlightenment.
The other type of pleasure is not samsaric, which is not based on ignorance or grasping. For example, the “Bliss” that is talked about in the Tantras. We are not wishing beings to be free from this form of pleasure—just the forms of pleasure related to samsara and suffering.
